One of America's most important cities, Washington DC is the official home of the President of the United States, who resides in the world-famous White House. Washington city is home to much more than just politics and features many truly breathtaking landmarks and grand buildings, with highlights including the MCI Center, a stunning sports arena hosting many prominent events.

To the west of the city center, Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is the city's premier airport, situated off the US-267 (Dulles Toll Road). Close to downtown Washington, the Ronald Reagan Airport (DCA) lies just a short distance to the south, alongside the banks of the Potomac River.

Getting there and away is not a problem in Washington, with long-distance Greyhound buses located along 1st Street NE and traveling to a host of cities, including Baltimore, New York City, Richmond and Wilmington, amongst other locations. Standing along Massachusetts Avenue NE, Washington Union Station features regular MARC commuter trains and a good selection of reliable Amtrak services.

Edged by the Potomac River to one side and also by the state of Maryland to the other, the city of Washington is split into four main sectors. The majority of the city's main tourist attractions can be found in the northwestern quadrant. A large number of tourist information centers are available around the city, all of which offer a good selection of leaflets and city maps. These include the International Visitors Information Service at the arrivals hall within the complex of Dulles Airport, and the Chamber of Commerce visitors center at the Ronald Reagan Building along Pennsylvania Avenue.
